Healthy Holidays

Ahh, how I love the holidays. Joyful children, time with family, pretty lights everywhere you go, and... stress?

That's right, folks. As much as I truly do love the holidays, today I'd like to talk about a part of the holiday season that isn't talked about as often: the stress that comes with it.

If you feel that the holidays are stressful, I'm here to tell you that you aren't alone. Healthline conducted a survey of their readers in 2015, and found that 44% of respondents felt that the holidays were "somewhat stressful", while another 18% found them "very stressful". However, you don't have to put all of your beliefs into this one survey to get the gist of how Americans feel about stress levels during the holidays. Although all of the studies and surveys I could find on this topic had their slight differences, they all agreed on the general concept that stress levels absolutely rise during the holidays... at least for a large portion of the population, that is.

Let's be real. It makes total sense for stress levels to rise this time of the year! So often we find ourselves being stretched too thin - feeling obligated to attend every Christmas party we are invited to, spending money on gifts, making travel plans... all while keeping up with the other regular commitments of life as well. Plus, if you're a student, you also likely have finals around this time as the cherry on top.

So, here's what I propose you do this holiday season: make a list of all the things that you enjoy doing and take some time for yourself.

That's right. You are allowed to take some time for yourself. Self-care is so important at all times of the year, don't let it slip! Do the best you can to carve out a little "me time" when you can - even if it's just for 15 minutes. Make a list of the things you like to do, include at least a few things that you could do in 15 minutes or less, and do them! You can't pour from an empty cup - make sure to take care of yourself first.

Here is my personal list of "cup-filling" activities. Some would take just 15 minutes, some would take more. Check out my list for some possible inspiration and make your own!

  • Go for a walk
  • Drink some tea or hot cocoa
  • Watch an episode of Grey's Anatomy
  • Play a board game with my husband
  • Bullet Journal
  • Bake something yummy!
  • Put on my current favorite song and DANCE around my kitchen
  • Call my parents
  • Cuddle the bunny
  • Arrange a "girls night" with the bestie
  • Skype my friends in Montana
  •

What would make it onto your list? Share some of your ideas in the comments!
