With everything going on in the world recently, a lot more people are working out at home right now. No matter what type of workouts you enjoy or where you do them, I think we can all agree that sometimes it's hard to stay motivated! Motivation is one of those things that can come and go in waves, and that's totally normal. But today I want to share with you some tips to spruce up your at-home workout - because the more you enjoy working out, and the simpler you make it for yourself, the more motivated you are to stick to it!
Let's jump right in!
1. Pick a workout that LIGHTS YOU UP.
Not everyone likes the same things. Some people enjoy the calming flow of yoga, while others want to punch it out in a virtual kickboxing class. The magic of exercise is that there are SO MANY OPTIONS that there is bound to be something for everyone. If you try something and it's not your jam, then try something else! You want to find a workout that you are truly excited to take part in. That being said, also be aware that any new workout you try will likely be challenging the first time you do it - and that doesn't mean you should give up right away! However, if you truly don't enjoy it, maybe test the waters of another workout instead. There is something out there for you, I just know it! Once you find the thing (or things) that you LOVE, it will be a lot easier to commit to them.
2. Choose your workout for the day ahead of time.
Based on the workout formats that LIGHT YOU UP, plan what your workout is going to be before it's time to actually do it! Maybe this means that you are putting together your own resistance training workout. It could also mean that you are choosing workout videos on youtube, or signing up for virtual classes led by your favorite instructor. You can plan these things out the night before, or you could even plan out an entire week of workouts ahead of time. Just find the method that works for you! This takes out the guess work so that when it comes time to sweat, you don't waste time "picking" what you are going to do that day - you just do it!
3. Plan when you will workout.
Similarly to planning what your workout is, you also want to plan when you are going to do it! If you're a lunchtime worker-outer, great! If you like getting your sweat sesh in after work at the end of the day, awesome! Or, maybe you're one of those crazy 5am workout people (I wish I could be you) - that works, too! The "right" time to workout is whatever time works best for you and your body. Play around with different times to figure out what you like, and then start scheduling your workouts for that window by writing down your schedule in your planner or phone calendar. It's also a good idea to schedule your rest days, so that you don't get burnt out. By committing to a set schedule, you are more likely to stick to a specific time and DO IT rather than just saying that you'll "get to it later".
4. Find a workout buddy.
Does someone else in your household want to commit to working out with you? Exercising with a friend can not only make things more fun, but also keep you accountable because you know that they are counting on you to show up! If you aren't able to workout with someone in person, ask a friend to do it with you virtually! You can workout "together" through FaceTime, or you can make a pact to stick to a routine and text each other each time you complete a workout. Doing it this way may not be the same as working out together in person, but you'll still be able to cheer each other on and keep each other accountable! Plus, you'll have someone to send that "OMG, SO SORE" text to the morning after a crazy workout.
5. Create a designated workout space.
You don't have to have a home gym or a fancy yoga studio in your house. But you should choose a space to designate for your workouts. This doesn't necessarily mean that the space is always workout-ready, with a yoga mat laid out on the floor and equipment lying around. But you should be able to convert the space quickly and easily when you're ready for your workout. For example, you can keep your yoga mat stored in a basket near an open space in the living room - just grab it and go when the time comes! Having everything easily accessible in whatever space you are using will make it that much easier to get your workout in. No excuses!
There you have it, friends. 5 suggestions to motivate yourself to workout at home. By trying out these tips and getting yourself excited about working out, you can shift your mindset from "I need to workout" to "I GET to workout!" - and that, my friends, is a truly magical feeling.
I hope this gave you some ideas to spruce up your at-home workouts! Let me know in the comments if any of these suggestions inspired you! Do you have other suggestions to stay motivated to workout at home?
