Hello, my beautiful chickpeas! Today's recipe is my current breakfast obsession. It's sweet (but not too sweet), easy to make, packed full of great blueberry nutrients, and perfect for your morning toast. Let's jump into my Balsamic Blueberry Jam!

Balsamic Blueberry Jam: 35 minute recipe.

I love how easily this one comes together, and there's nothing that makes me feel more fancy than a homemade jam for breakfast.

Inspiration for Balsamic Blueberry Jam

Last year I shared my 4-Ingredient Chia Raspberry Jam with you, and it was a hit! This summer I wanted to bring you another delicious jam, but this time I wanted it to have a bit more of a traditional texture (rather than a chia seed texture), and I also wanted to bring a totally new flavor profile so you can switch things up.

Homemade Jam with fresh blueberries on an english muffin.

This jam uses arrowroot powder as a thickener, which gives us more of a traditional jam texture than chia seeds would. I also decided to include balsamic vinegar in this recipe to make the flavor more interesting. Balsamic and blueberries are a match made in heaven in my book, and the combo lends itself nicely to a jam! It makes our jam sweet but also just a tad sour and tangy.

Ingredients

One thing I love about this recipe is how simple it is - you only need 4 ingredients (plus water) to pull this one together!

Homemade Blueberry Jam on toasted english muffins.
  • Blueberries - we use fresh blueberries here to make our homemade jam as fresh as possible!
  • Balsamic vinegar - to make our flavor deeper and more interesting!
  • Maple syrup - for a touch more sweetness.
  • Arrowroot powder - this will help to thicken our Balsamic Blueberry Jam so that it is perfectly spreadable on your morning toast.

How to Make Balsamic Blueberry Jam

A lot of people can be overwhelmed at the idea of a jam recipe - but I promise you this one really isn't complicated! Let's go over the basics.

Homemade Balsamic Blueberry Jam made with fresh blueberries.
  1. Add all ingredients (except arrowroot) to a pot and bring to medium heat.
  2. Bring it to a simmer, mash the berries, and allow to simmer another 5 minutes.
  3. Add arrowroot and stir to combine.
  4. Simmer another 10-20 minutes or until it reaches your desired thickness.
  5. Remove from heat and cool at room temperature.

Tips & Tricks

I wouldn't mess much with the recipe itself here, altering anything could affect the thickness and the overall consistency. However, there are so many delicious ways to enjoy this homemade jam, so let's talk about some fun ways to use this recipe!

Balsamic Blueberry Jam on breakfast toast.
  • The most obvious option here is to enjoy it on toast or an english muffin for breakfast! It's simple but so good.
  • For another fun breakfast idea, plop this jam on top of a smoothie bowl or stir it into your favorite vegan yogurt!
  • This jam is great for a fun charcuterie board - spread it on crackers and pair it with other delicious fruits or nuts.
  • Because this jam has a deeper flavor from the balsamic vinegar, I personally think it works great as a sandwich condiment. Pair it with a vegan mozzarella and some fresh veggies on your favorite bread, and you've got yourself a delicious lunch!

From Start to Finish35 minutes mins
Servings10 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh blueberries
  • 2 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 3 tablespoon pure maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoon Water
  • 2 teaspoon arrowroot

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients except arrowroot powder to medium pot and gradually bring to medium heat, stirring regularly.
  • Once your mixture starts to simmer (usually around 5 minutes), mash the berries in the pot with a potato masher or another utensil of choice. Allow to simmer another 5 minutes.
  • Add arrowroot to the pot and stir to combine.
  • Keep your jam at a simmer (DON'T let it boil), and cook another 10-20 minutes or until it reaches your desired thickness (keep in mind that it will thicken a bit more as it cools). Ideally you want your jam thick enough that when you run a spatula through it, it takes a few seconds for the space to fill back up.
  • Remove from heat and allow to cool at room temp.

Hi Murdie! Since this jam uses fresh fruit and not much additional sugar, it won’t last as long as store-bought. It should keep in the fridge for about a week (though the exact time will depend on the freshness of your blueberries, temp of your fridge, etc), or you can freeze it for longer. Hope that helps!
