Hello, my beautiful chickpeas! Today we are making a classic sandwich, but completely veganized. This Vegan BLT With Avocado & Tempeh Bacon is the perfect plant based lunch for any sandwich lover! It's filling without being too heavy, and the Smoky Tempeh Bacon gives great bacon vibes without the animal products.
I love prepping the tempeh bacon over the weekend and then assembling these sandwiches for lunches throughout the week. You can even keep this oil-free by using my Easy Vegan Mayo!
Inspiration for Vegan BLT With Avocado & Tempeh Bacon
It recently came to my attention that I don't have many sandwich recipes on the blog, and I decided that this needed to change! When I came out with my Smoky Tempeh Bacon earlier this year, I immediately got started on a BLT to go with it.
On top of our Smoky Tempeh Bacon, this BLT also uses the classic tomato and lettuce, avocado for some extra creamy texture and healthy fats, and some vegan mayo and garlic salt for an extra boost of flavor. It's a more wholesome version of the BLT that so many of us know and love, and I can't wait for you to try it!
Ingredients
There isn't anything super wild in this delicious vegan sandwich, but everything comes together to create such a delicious combination of flavors! Here's what we are working with today.
- Sourdough: sourdough is a great bread for this vegan BLT because the slightly sour flavor plays very well with our smoky bacon.
- Smoky Tempeh Bacon: the star of the show! This one takes a little over an hour to make, but most of this is just spent letting your tempeh marinate and soak up all those smoky flavors.
- Lettuce & tomato: obviously necessary! I also love the crispiness of the fresh lettuce.
- Avocado: for some creamy texture and healthy fats!
- Vegan mayo & garlic salt: these add an extra level of flavor that make our BLT stand out.
How to Make
Once the bacon is made, this one comes together pretty fast!
- Mash the avocado onto one piece of bread.
- Top the avocado with tomato, lettuce, and Smoky Tempeh Bacon.
- Spread vegan mayo on the other piece of bread, and sprinkle on some garlic salt.
- Sandwich the two pieces of bread together and enjoy!
Tips & Tricks
The nice thing about sandwiches is that they are versatile and easy to make your own! Here are a few ideas for you if you are feeling experimental.
- I think hummus would also be a fun flavor booster here! If you aren't a vegan mayo fan, just replace the mayo with a bit of hummus for a slightly different flavor boost.
- I love the sourdough here, but you can use any bread you'd like! Whatever you happen to have at home will do the trick. I also think making this with a bagel would be a fun twist!
- I know the classic BLT is just bacon, lettuce, and tomato - but don't be afraid to throw on some extra veggies if you want! I think some pickled onions or even thin slices of carrot would also be delicious here.
