Hello, my chickpeas! It's about time for a brand new vegan breakfast recipe, and this Vegan French Toast does not disappoint! This eggless french toast is made with silken tofu, has an oil-free option, and is perfect for a weekend brunch. Perfectly sweet with slightly crispy edges, your next indulgent (but also somewhat wholesome) breakfast is right around the corner.

This Vegan French Toast is easier to make than you may think, and is the perfect start to your day. Grab some maple syrup and let's dig in!
Inspiration for Vegan French Toast
Growing up, one of my favorite weekend activities was to have my friends over for sleepovers. If we were lucky, in the morning my parents would make us something a little special for breakfast. One of the common requests on these mornings was my dad's french toast.
This Vegan French Toast is obviously much different from his since I veganized it. But it satisfies that nostalgic craving every time, even without the dairy & egg! The silken tofu blends up beautifully to create a delicious eggless batter that crisps the edges of our toast perfectly. You can even leave out the optional vegan butter to keep this one oil-free!
Ingredients
The ingredients of this recipe really come together to make that eggy french toast flavor without any of the eggs. Let's go over our ingredients.
- Nondairy milk & silken tofu: these make up the base of our batter. They create a custardy consistency and the tofu even provides some protein!
- Cinnamon, nutmeg, pure maple syrup, & vanilla extract: these give us that sweet and slightly cinnamon flavor that french toast is known for.
- Kala namak black salt: this makes up our eggy flavor! If you haven't had this before, it's a game changer for eggless vegan cooking.
- Arrowroot powder: this helps make the outside of our french toast crispy, while keeping the inside fluffier.
- Thick vegan bread of choice: any will do! I personally like Nature's Own Perfectly Crafted Multigrain Bread, which happens to be vegan! (Or at least is at the time of me writing this post, always feel free to double check just in case!)
- Optional vegan butter: French toast is traditionally fried in butter, but in this recipe the vegan butter is optional. I actually like the texture more without the butter, but you can use it if you prefer a more traditional option! Leaving out the vegan butter will keep this recipe oil-free (assuming you also use oil-free bread).
How to Make Vegan French Toast
The step-by-step process of making this Vegan French Toast is pretty similar to traditional versions! Of course the full directions are at the bottom of this post, but here are the basics.
- Preheat your oven to 300F and toast your bread in the oven for 9 minutes.
- Blend together all the batter ingredients. Pour the batter into a shallow dish.
- Heat a nonstick pan over medium-low heat. Dip the bread into the batter for 10 seconds on each side, and transfer to the preheated pan. Cook for 1-2 minutes on each side. Transfer to a wire rack and repeat this process with the rest of the slices.
- Serve with your toppings of choice and enjoy!
Tips & Tricks
This Vegan French Toast was tested many times in my kitchen, so of course I have some tips on how to best enjoy it!
- This eggless french toast actually reheats really well in the toaster! Feel free to make a batch of this over the weekend and store the slices in the fridge. Then you can toast individual pieces in the toaster throughout the week!
- This Vegan French Toast generally comes out best when cooked over medium-low heat, but every stovetop is a little different! If yours is cooking too quickly or isn't crisping up enough, adjust the heat as needed based on your stove.

Vegan French Toast (Eggless!)
Ingredients
- ¾ cup nondairy milk - (I usually use cashew milk)
- 8 oz silken tofu
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon nutmeg
- 2 tablespoon pure maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ⅛ teaspoon kala namak black salt
- ⅛ teaspoon salt
- 1 ½ tablespoon arrowroot powder
- 6-8 slices thick vegan bread of choice*
- Optional: 3-4 tablespoon vegan butter (for frying)
Optional toppings:
- pure maple syrup
- banana slices
- berries
- powdered sugar
Instructions
- Slightly toast your bread: Preheat oven to 300F. Place your bread slices on a baking tray and bake for 9 minutes, flipping them halfway through. We want the slices slightly dry but not brown. (Note that if your bread is already dry, you can skip this step). You can work on step 2 while your bread is toasting.
- Make the batter: In a high-powered blender, combine the nondairy milk, silken tofu, cinnamon, nutmeg, maple syrup, vanilla extract, kala namak black salt, and regular salt. Blend until smooth. Add the arrowroot powder and blend once more until fully incorporated. Pour your batter into a shallow dish.
- Cook the french toast: -Heat a large skillet over medium-low heat. If using the optional vegan butter, add 1 tablespoon of vegan butter to the pan and let it melt.-Dip one slice of bread into the batter, ensuring it's fully coated, and swirl around in the batter for 10 seconds. Flip the bread to the other side and swirl for another 10 seconds. -Transfer the battered slice to the preheated pan. Let it cook without moving it around the pan for for 1-2 minutes, then flip and cook for another 1-2 minutes on the other side. (For a softer French toast, avoid pressing the toast down with a spatula. For a slightly firmer texture, press down gently with a spatula as it cooks). Both sides should be golden brown when done.-Transfer cooked French toast slices to a wire rack to help keep them crisp. Repeat this cooking process with the remaining slices. (If your pan is large enough you can do 2 slices at a time). If using vegan butter, continue adding 1 tablespoon of vegan butter in between slices as needed to ensure that there is always some vegan butter in the pan.
- Serve with toppings of your choice - such as maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh fruit!
